Cameron Invited to Visit Tar Sands

April 22nd, 2010

James Cameron has called the Alberta tar sands a “black eye” on Canada’s environmental record, and said that it is the “wrong solution” for energy. In light of those statements, Alberta’s Premier Ed Stelmach and Environment Minister Rob Renner ave invited Cameron to visit the development.

The two politicians think Cameron got the wrong impression of the tar sands, and want him to see it both on the ground, and from the air. They think that by providing him the additional information he doesn’t have, he will be able to form a more informed opinion.

Indian Tribe Seeking James Cameron’s Help

February 10th, 2010

Dongria Kondh, an indigenous tribe in India, has sent a plee for help to director James Cameron. They want Cameron to help them stop the mining company Vedanta Resources from opening an open-cast mine on a mountain they consider to be a sacred place.

The tribe compares their plight to that of the Na’vi, whose moon, Pandora, was being mined by the RDA for its unobtanium. It’s that main similarity that they believe will help them if they can recruit Cameron to their cause.

For more information, and a quote from the director of the charity that campaigns on behalf of the tribe, look below the cut.

In 1971, Veruschka von Lehndorff posed for the magazine doused in body paint and posed in the wildlife. Does it remind you of Pandora and the Na’vi? I can definitely see the similarities.

February 5th, 2010

If 3D isn’t enough for you, maybe you should make a trip to South Korea to see Avatar in 4D!

Tom Oh of 20th Century Fox Korea says the company begun working on a 4D Avatar ride last summer. It has more than 30 effects over the course of the movie, and they include moving seats, smells of explosives, sprinkling water, laser lights and wind.

Korea’s leading cinema company, CJ-CGV, began 4D shows last year and opened up another three 4D cinemas after seeing its success. It has shown ten films in its 4D-plexes so far, and has more in the works.

3D WATCH: Priest, Transformers in 3D?

February 5th, 2010

The newest movies on the list of those switching to 3D after the success of Avatar are Priest and the Transformers series.

Originally set to be released on August 20th, Priest has been delayed for five months until January 14th, 2011. It’s expected that the movie will be undergoing 3D conversion during that time.

Michael Bay was adamant last year when talking about Transformers 3 that it would not be in 3D, and that he saw it as being a gimmick. It seems that many have changed, as Variety is now reporting that he’s in talks with Paramount and Industrial Light and Magic for the movie to be made in 3D. They say the biggest stumbling block in making the change is the extra time that will be required for visual effects, considering the release date has already been set for July 1, 2011.
