Earlier this week the release date for Avatar on DVD and Blu-ray was made official: April 22, as James Cameron said a few weeks ago. However, the release will be very different than past DVD releases.
The DVD and Blu-ray versions will be released on a Thursday, instead of the usual Tuesday releases, because April 22 is Earth Day. Fox also plans to launch an environmental campaign to promote the release and Avatar‘s themes of ecological harmony.
What is included on the discs is also not typical of most releases. They will include only a simple menu, and the theatrical-length movie. There will be no elaborate menus, no special features, not even trailers at the beginning of the movie (the first new release on Blu-ray not to have any). By taking out all the excess and just focusing on the movie, Jon Landau said they’d be able to get the best sound and frame rate possible.
This release will only be in 2D, and if Fox has its way the 3D versions of the movie won’t come out until 2011. James Cameron will be attending a press conference on March 23 to discuss the upcoming release, the environmental campaign, as well as an “ultimate” edition that is being planned for November. The “ultimate” edition is expected to include up to 40 minutes in extended footage, as well as the interviews, making of content, and other special features we’re used to seeing on disc releases.
There will be two discs on release day: a regular DVD, and a two-disc that will include copies of both the Blu-ray and DVD. In the United Kingdom, a Limited Edition steelbook will also be released that will include the two-disc (Blu-ray and DVD) version of the film, as well as 4 art cards and the Avatar Survival Guide.
