Alice Far Surpasses Avatar

March 8th, 2010

With the release of Alice in Wonderland this weekend, Avatar‘s earnings dropped more than 40% from last weekend, probably because theatres gave most of their 3D screens to Alice.

Coming in at the top, Alice made $116.3 million domestically and a total of $210.3 million worldwide. Brooklyn’s Finest and Shutter Island took the second and third spots with $13.5 million and $13.3 million, respectively, while Cop Out was in fourth with $9.145 million. Falling to fifth, Avatar made just $7.7 million.

The higher-than-expected opening for Alice was much greater than Avatar‘s $77 million opening in December, but many believe Avatar helped Alice by introducing people to 3D and making them want to see another world using the technology.

Avatar Becomes First to Hit $2 Billion!

January 31st, 2010

After a great seventh weekend where Avatar again finished first place in both domestic and foreign markets, it earned enough to become the first film ever to make more than $2 billion worldwide.

This weekend Avatar‘s domestic take fell only 14% from last weekend, making approximately $30 million and bringing the domestic total to $594.5 million. This places the film only $6.3 million behind Titanic for the #1 domestic gross record. Its main competitor was the new Mel Gibson movie, Edge of Darkness, which only managed to earn $17.1 million.

In terms of the foreign earnings, where Avatar has already taken the top record, it made $95.1 million this weekend, down only 12% from last weekend’s numbers. This places the foreign earnings at $1.45 billion, with the top contributions of the weekend coming from Italy ($10.9 million) and China ($9.7 million).

Now that Avatar has hit this milestone, we should ask: Will it make another billion? I’ve seen some websites that believe it may make it that far, but others that think $3 billion is wishful thinking. The most important parts of Avatar‘s growth have been the low rate of decline in weekly sales, the premium price of 3D tickets, and the word-of-mouth promotion that’s been causing many to see the film that wouldn’t have at first considered it. I guess we’ll just have to see how the movie progresses in the coming weeks.

To see the totals for many of Avatar‘s most important markets, continue below the cut.
