Already Bestselling Blu-ray Ever

April 26th, 2010

After just four days of being released in the United States and Canada, Avatar has already become the bestselling Blu-ray movie ever. It has sold an approximate 2.7 million Blu-ray copies and 4 million DVD copies in the domestic market so far. The Dark Knight held the previous record selling 2.5 million Blu-ray discs since its release.

Avatar is also now the biggest disc launch of the year, beating New Moon‘s combined 4 million DVD and Blu-ray sales in early March.

Europe is also proving to be a good market for the movie. It sold a combined 400,000 DVD and Blu-ray movies in France since Thursday, becoming the biggest disc launch in the country’s history; and is on top of the charts in Germany. It was released in Britain today, so there aren’t yet any sales numbers.

Weaver said that Grace is currently inside of “the tree”, or Eywa, but she isn’t sure how Cameron intends to revive her character.

Avatar Still Dominating Worldwide Box Office

January 10th, 2010

Having been out for more than 4 weeks, Avatar is still the top earner worldwide and is continuing to break records in many countries. It has now made $429 million dollars domestically and $906.2 million in foreign markets, totalling to $1.335 billion.

In the domestic market, Avatar was on top of the box office for its fourth weekend in a row, making $48.5 million over its course. This means the movie now holds the record for highest fourth weekend earnings, and is the 7th highest-grossing movie domestically.

Avatar also had a great week in China where it had the biggest opening week ever, making $40.2 million over 2474 screens. On Saturday the box office total in China was $8.2 million, a single day market record.

France has become the first foreign market to produce more than $100 million for the film (it’s reached $110.5 million), generating $11.7 million over the weekend from 1111 screens. Germany made $9.9 million this past weekend on 994 screens, and has realized a total of $73.4 million.

The United Kingdom’s earnings now stand at $66.8 million after a $7.5 million weekend in 470 theatres. Aside from those select countries, other large earners include Australia ($57.8 million), Russia ($69.5 million), Spain ($60 million), South Korea ($54.5 million) and Japan ($50.8 million).

Avatar is set to become the first movie to make more than $100 million in IMAX theatres. It is being shown in IMAX on 179 screens in US and Canada, and 82 in other markets. The current gross is at $91 million, and is expected to hit the $100 million mark later this week.

Big Foreign Sales Behind Momentum

January 5th, 2010

Since Avatar hit theaters three weeks ago, two-thirds of its total earnings have been made in foreign markets and they’ve become crucial to the movie’s success. The 3D version of the film is being shown on 30% of the screens abroad, but it’s accounting for 64% of the revenue.

It’s doing extremely well in Russia where it’s already made $55.5 million, making it the highest-earning movie in Russia’s history. Some theaters have had to schedule screenings at 3AM and 5:30AM in Moscow, where 3D shows have been sold out up to a week in advance. Movie operators in the country have great respect for James Cameron after Titanic, which he also directed, brought the industry back from the brink on its release.

France is also proving to be a big market for Avatar where it’s made $85.6 million, the highest revenue in any country other than the United States, and is being shown on 500 screens, the most of any European country. The movie has made $56.1 million in Germany.

Some moviegoers say they were drawn to see the film because of its seeming anti-capitalist message and commentary on the United States foreign policy. A French left-leaning magazine called Liberation praised Cameron as the “galaxy’s eco warrior.”
