Theatrical Rerelease Set for August

April 24th, 2010

The extended theatrical rerelease of Avatar that we’ve been hearing about for the past couple months has now been confirmed to be coming out in August by James Cameron.

There will be six minutes of new footage added to the movie for release in August, but contrary to previous reports, the longer sex scene will not be one of them. Cameron didn’t specify what we’d see in those six minutes, but said that Weta Digital is working on them now.

When looking at the numbers, Cameron made a good case for releasing the movie again because he believes audiences still want to watch it. He said that earnings went from declining 8% a week to 50% a week because of the other big 3D movies that had to take over the screens.

Cameron Invited to Visit Tar Sands

April 22nd, 2010

James Cameron has called the Alberta tar sands a “black eye” on Canada’s environmental record, and said that it is the “wrong solution” for energy. In light of those statements, Alberta’s Premier Ed Stelmach and Environment Minister Rob Renner ave invited Cameron to visit the development.

The two politicians think Cameron got the wrong impression of the tar sands, and want him to see it both on the ground, and from the air. They think that by providing him the additional information he doesn’t have, he will be able to form a more informed opinion.

Half of Avatar Preorders for Blu-ray

March 26th, 2010

According to James Cameron, half of all preorders for Avatar so far are for the Blu-ray version of the movie. This is a first, as Blu-ray usually makes up only 15% of most movie sales.

At an event in West Hollywood, Cameron said he thinks the same is happening in homes as what happened in theatres: people are choosing to pay more for the premium experience.

He also talked about the environmental aspect of the film, saying that he has been an environmentalist for a long time, but making Avatar took it to a new level. With the release of the movie on DVD and Blu-ray, Cameron hopes more children will be able to see it and that they will become “warriors for our planet, or else it’s not going to survive.”

Watching Avatar on iPhone is “Dumb”

March 26th, 2010

While talking about the upcoming release of Avatar, James Cameron said it would be “dumb” to watch the movie on iPhone because the screen is so small. He also said the movie shouldn’t be watched on a laptop, but does understand there are occasions when it’s acceptable (travelling, on vacation, etc).

Despite his thoughts, Avatar will go on sale on iTunes in May.

Sex Scene in Rerelease + DVD Deleted Scenes

March 25th, 2010

James Cameron talked to Sci-fi Wire about the scenes that will be added in the summer theatre rerelease, and the November extended DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Although he isn’t yet sure whether or not the movie will be rereleased this summer, Cameron said that if it is, the parts they cut from the sex scene with Jake and Neytiri will be included. He admitted that people were freaked out about it at first, but he’s going to include it in the extended theatre release regardless.

When speaking about the November extended release, Cameron acknowledged that he thinks fans will want to see how they made the movie, and that special features will further explain the process. He said there was a four-and-a-half-minute section that takes place on Earth before Jake goes to Pandora, and that it will be included as a deleted scene, but not in the actual movie. Part of that is a barfight with Jake in his wheelchair.

“We’re Going To Do Avatar 3, 4, & 5″

March 24th, 2010

While speaking to Access Hollywood, Sam Worthington said he’s starting to think that Avatar 3, 4, and 5 will end up being made. He said he’s signed a contract for a couple sequels, but James Cameron will need a challenge if he decides to go ahead with more sequels.

Cameron has already confirmed there will be at least one sequel, and that he hopes to make two.

Extended Rerelease Expected this Summer

March 18th, 2010

In an interview with USA Today last week, James Cameron mentioned that Avatar could be rereleased this summer because Alice in Wonderland took most of the 3D screens a few weeks ago while people were still flocking to Avatar.

Since then, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the rerelease could include an extra 10 to 12 minutes of the 40 minutes of footage that was cut from the film for theatre release. This would make the film very close to 170 minutes long, the maximum for IMAX locations. The scenes that will be added are one where Jack further proves himself to the Na’vi clan (most likely the Sturmbeest hunt), and a clip showing a festival where Tsu-tey gets drunk – or the Na’vi equivalent.

Cameron expects there’s still another couple hundred million dollars to be made in theatres from the film, and it seems like he’s determined to make sure it doesn’t get left behind.

Samsung, Panasonic Fighting for Avatar

March 14th, 2010

Reports have come out over the past few weeks suggesting that Samsung and Panasonic may be fighting for the rights to bundle Avatar with their upcoming 3D TVs.

James Cameron appeared at a Samsung launch event for their upcoming 3D TV sets a few days ago, and many people are saying that Samsung is offering “big money” to include a copy of the Avatar Blu-ray with them when it is released.

On the other hand, Panasonic was one of the companies that helped to sponsor the movie and used the trailer to promote their televisions. At their 2010 CES press conference, Avatar‘s producer Jon Landau was one of the speakers.

Both companies have obvious connections to the film and its creators, but in the end it will most likely come down to who offers the most money. I guess we’ll find out who wins when the bundling starts in a few months!

Call it Na’vi, Not Avatar 2: Cameron

March 3rd, 2010

James Cameron talked a little about Avatar 2 at the Visual Effects Society Awards, and the most important thing he said was actually that we shouldn’t be referring to it as Avatar 2, but instead as Na’vi. His reasoning was that at the end of Avatar, Jake is now longer an avatar; he becomes a Na’vi.

In terms of the story, Cameron said the sequel will have a greater focus on Na’vi culture and spirituality. Since audiences have flocked to the film, he believes they’re more open to those things after having them introduced in the first film.

A deal hasn’t yet been completed for Cameron to direct the second film, but he made clear that it would be no one but him. He isn’t ready to hand it over to a different director, at least not at this point in the series.

Weaver Says Grace Will Return in Sequel

February 28th, 2010

Sigourney Weaver was on France’s Le Grand Journal earlier this week where she was asked about the plans for Avatar 2.

Even though her character, Grace Augustine, died near the end of the first Avatar movie, Weaver said she’s talked to James Cameron, and that he wants for Grace to return to keep the family together.

Weaver said that Grace is currently inside of “the tree”, or Eywa, but she isn’t sure how Cameron intends to revive her character.
