Weaver Says Grace Will Return in Sequel

February 28th, 2010

Sigourney Weaver was on France’s Le Grand Journal earlier this week where she was asked about the plans for Avatar 2.

Even though her character, Grace Augustine, died near the end of the first Avatar movie, Weaver said she’s talked to James Cameron, and that he wants for Grace to return to keep the family together.

Weaver said that Grace is currently inside of “the tree”, or Eywa, but she isn’t sure how Cameron intends to revive her character.

Will Grace Return in Avatar 2?

January 19th, 2010

Sigourney Weaver talked to MTV about the Avatar sequel at the Golden Globes last night, and hinted that Grace may return.

Although Grace dies near the end of Avatar, Weaver said it is science fiction, so anything can happen. She also reminded MTV that Grace was connected with Eywa, so she’s still somewhere.

What do you think? Should Grace return, or would it be too far of a stretch even for science fiction?

Avatar Takes Golden Globes’ Top Prize!

January 18th, 2010

The Golden Globe Awards took place earlier tonight, and the results for Avatar were the best we could imagine. Although it lost in the Best Score and Best Original Song categories, it won in those where it really counts.

James Cameron took home the award for Best Director (Motion Picture), and Avatar won the top award: Best Motion Picture (Drama). Cameron, Jon Landau, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver all went up on stage to accept the Best Motion Picture award, where Cameron said that everyone there had the best job ever, and that they should applaud themselves. He ended by giving the true message of the movie in saying, “Avatar asks us to see that everything is connected. All human beings to each other, and us to the earth. And, y’know, if you have to go four and a half lightyears to another, made-up planet to appreciate this miracle of a world that we have right here, well y’know what: that’s the power of cinema right there. That’s the magic.”

It was a truly great night for Avatar, its cast, and the crew. Oscar speculation is already raging, and we’ll see if they get nominated when the list gets released on February 2nd.

Cameron Responds to Smoking Opposition

January 4th, 2010

Avatar and its director, James Cameron, have been taking some criticism recently for scenes included in the movie where Dr. Grace Augustine, played by Sigourney Weaver, is smoking. Some anti-smoking groups have even gone to the extent of saying it delivers a pro-smoking message.

Over the weekend Cameron responded to the accusations by email saying that Grace was never meant to be an aspirational role model, and that her actions (smoking, drinking, swearing) show how little she cares about her human body, noting that she prefers her avatar body. He also says it’s a commentary on people living in the real world who spend far too much time using their avatars online or in video games.

When talking about the rating system, Cameron points out that PG-13 movies allow the portrayed of lying, cheating, stealing, and killing, and doesn’t see why smoking is so much worse. In finishing, he expresses that he doesn’t support smoking, and nor does he believe Avatar does.
